Software Development with Apache Wicket

Gerolf Seiz presented at the ApacheCon Europe 08 in Amsterdam the topic "Apache Wicket - web development with just java".

With Apache Wicket the software developer received a component-based, object oriented solution on open source basis. So web applications could be created in an easy and quick way.

Enthusiastic for Apache Wicket

“Every behavior is situated in the Java-Code and not in the HTML Markup-Code. Thus all possibilities of modern software development environment could be used. By this means a segmentation of responsibility is possible: the designer works on the HTML code and need not focus on logic. The developer uses the HTML code and realizes the components in Java, mentions Gerolf Seitz, who is committer for Apache Wicket.

No XML necessary

All configurations are in Java-Code. Two configurations are possible, development and deployment. In the development mode .html files will be automatically loaded after a change in the cache. Exceptions with helpful error-texts are displayed directly in the browser. In the deployment mode all exceptions will be replaced by an “internal error” page – the user never gets a so called “stack trace”.  A lot of basic components are available. From simple form elements to flexible tables. Beside a lot of Ajax able components, integrations for the most common JavaScript

Capabilities

The strengths of Apache Wicket show to advantage when realizing complicated user interfaces. Important for an enterprise environment is the possibility of making security checks on components basis, that means that several components could be blanked out     automatically for defined user groups. The most important advantage is the increase in the fields of productivity, maintainability and the extensibility in comparison to traditional web frameworks.

The SCCH uses Apache Wicket for the internal application of the time recording system.

You will find more information on the website of the conference as well as on the official website of Apache Wicket.
