A Framework for Change Impact Analysis in the Enhancement and Maintenance of Software Systems

Günter Pirklbauer

A Framework for Change Impact Analysis in the Enhancement and Maintenance of Software Systems is the subject of the PhD work by Günter Pirklbauer. This work primarily concerns SCCH’s SET Area and is supervised by Prof. Dr. Reinhold Plösch (Johannes Kepler University Linz). In industry, techniques and tools in the field of software traceability are poorly applied as the determination, registration and management of dependencies are cost- and time intensive activities. In addition, there exists little and inappropriate tool support. The goal of this PhD work is to explore the conceptual and theoretical foundations of impact analysis of changes in the enhancement and maintenance of existing and highly integrated software systems. The long-term vision of this work is to provide a theoretically profound framework that supports change impact analysis in the enhancement and maintenance of software systems in an automatic manner. The idea pursued in this PhD project is to combine principles of software traceability and software evolution analysis to determine implicit dependencies among artifacts.
