The history of a research center

Software Competence Center Hagenberg (SCCH) was launched by five institutes of Johannes Kepler University Linz in 1999. Prof. Buchberger (RISC) and Prof. Pomberger (Institute for Business Informatics) along with Prof. Klement (Institute for Knowledge-Based Mathematical Systems; Fuzzy Logic Laboratory Linz-Hagenberg), Prof. Wagner (FAW Institute for Application-Oriented Knowledge Processing) and Prof. Engl (Institute for Industrial Mathematics) utilized the opportunity of the K plus competence center program to establish an application-oriented research facility at Softwarepark Hagenberg. Keen interest on the part of industry in this new form of cooperation significantly contributed to the rapid growth and success of SCCH.

By 2000 SCCH already had a staff of 40 working on application-oriented research projects. A significant success factor was the team consisting of SCCH employees as well as employees of scientific partners and partner companies.

Continuous adaptation and tuning of research interests to scientific developments and to the requirements of industry also led to changes and extensions in the roster of scientific partners and partner companies. Successful collaboration of science and industry confirms the competence center concept.

Nevertheless, SCCH does not rest on its laurels but continues its development. In the realm of the Comet competence center program, SCCH will be extended and so will attain the next stage in its development. This stage will emphasize international networking and further intensification of SCCH’s research activities.
