Enhanced Reuse of Services in the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) Paradigm

Thomas Ziebermayr

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is gaining momentum as paradigm for the development of enterprise applications. Although the use of services itself provides advantages concerning integration and reuse, it is necessary to provide additional infrastructure and support to be able to fully utilize the whole potential of SOA. The PhD project driven by Thomas Ziebermayr focuses on the enhanced reuse of services in SOA. The project started in July 2004 and primarily concerns the SCCH's DBT Area. The aim is to provide a framework that supports the selection and integration of existing services as well as the governance of the services based on usage statistics. On the one hand, this approach allows to better utilize service reuse as a key advantage of SOA, and on the other hand it allows to tailor the service offer to the services that are most needed. The basis for improved reuse is the accurate selection of services through semantic information in combination with integration tests that ensure the desired interplay between the services and the application at hand. The framework also provides tools that support developers in applying SOA to enterprise applications.
