Abstract | Knowledge Landscapes (KL) provide features that help to use hypertext systems more successfully in learning situations. In this study we tried to visualize the content of a HTML-based textbook on chemometrics, i.e. applied statistics for chemistry, by means of the Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML). Using the multimedia features and the interactivity provided by VRML~97, a both attractive and useful visualization of the textbook structure can be achieved. The calculation of the 2D projection of the KL was based on Kohonen's Self-Organizing Maps. Adding functional and pretty gadgets to the landscape, we could show that students quickly got an overview over the courses' content and were highly motivated to use the hypertext-based web training software. |
