The mission of the European Software Process Improvement Initiative (EuroSPI) is to develop an experience and knowledge exchange platform for Europe where systems, software and services process improvement practices can be discussed and exchanged and knowledge can be gathered and shared. Following the evolution of the state of the art and of industrial needs, EuroSPI gradually extended the scope of its conferences from software process improvement to systems, software and service-based process improvement and innovation. One of the major action lines of EuroSPI2 is to organize the annual EuroSPI2 conference supported by SPI Networks from different EU countries and the world. The EuroSPI2 conference presents and discusses results from systems, software and SPI projects in industry and research, focusing on the benefits gained and the criteria for success. The importance of the topic is well reflected by the increasing number (currently 148) of international standards related to the area developed and regularly updated by ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 7 Software and systems engineering, the Subcommittee responsible for the development of software and systems engineering standards in the Joint Technical Committee 1 of ISO and IEC. The aim of this Special Issue is to bring an overview of success cases as well as methods and standards to enable systems, software and service process improvement in organizations worldwide. More precisely, this special issue will focus on the influence and the applicability of standards in these areas in the industry. Thus, it includes a set of papers presented at EuroSPI2 2012 which was held on June 25-27, 2012 in Vienna (Austria). All submissions were peer-reviewed by top experts in the ?eld. Based on the reviews and our reading of the papers, we selected six high-quality ones to be published.
