Abstract This paper considers research issues and practical aspects with respect to building a global, distributed database platform for world-wide production environments. Particularly, it deals with replication, fragmentation, and data mapping issues and analyzes further research aspects due to the three orthogonal dimensions of federated database systems, namely, heterogeneity, distribution, and autonomy. The claimed results are illustrated using an example that involves three distributed manufacturing companies connected to a federated coordination site.
